it's possible he just made a mistake and never thought to fact-check, or that there IS some random debbie gibson song that would apply that we've never heard before (i'm not combing through her catalogue either!), but it seems unlikely given how well-known the other songs referenced in heartsongs are, that he would pick something more obscure.
anyway, i can't get behind the greatest man.... writing a nearly six minute song combining a bunch of different genres isn't really original or creative or mind-blowing in any way and the fact that none of the individual components, much less the entire song, are even remotely listenable doesn't help. and let's not even start with the rapping and the spoken word bits. i wouldn't fault weezer for going out on a limb with this track if liked the rest of the album, but i don't think the other songs that have leaked are good either.
I had stopped checking this comment section since a more recent news item was posted, but I'm glad that I did. Thanks for responding. I think I have learned to get over the Debbie Gibson line, though if our confusion is well-founded, then when either Tiffany or Debbie Gibson hear Heart Songs, they'll both be confused, too. As far as The Greatest Man goes, there are mainly two things I like about it -- the harmonies and the falsetto part starting with "Oh, baby..." As far as the rapping and the Elvis spoken word part, the reason that I like those is because it seems like Rivers is being silly and not taking himself too seriously -- If I thought for a moment that he was really that full of himself, I wouldn't like the song (or the band for that matter) at all. I'm not much of a rap listener, and I find much of what's popular in the way of rap on the radio is terrible.
The song sounds to me like an experiment in how much they can stretch a simple melody, and for that reason, I like it very much. It's fun to sing, at least.
Do the lyrics to this song include, "Radio - D.O.A.?" As in, this song is dead on arrival for radio airplay?
If that's the case, well played Mr. Cuomo.
