Does anyone happen to know if the Shaker hymn in question Joseph Brackett's Simple Gifts? I recognize the melody from one of my first guitar lessons years ago, but I cannot seem to place the title...
It's great to see one of the few original bands still out there come back to themselves. Make Believe was so... detached. But now my hopes just keep getting better and better. Originality restored I think.
I'm glad that someone recognized the melody -- It was driving me crazy the first few times I heard the song, so I'm glad that I asked. Here's another question for you. I don't know if you've heard Heart Songs or not, but there's a lyric that says, "Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone." Now I'm not a big follower of Debbie Gibson, so I may very well be mistaken, but I can't help but think it's a reference to the I Think We're Alone Now cover by Tiffany. I guess it's equally likely to be a Debbie Gibson song that I've just never heard. Either way, I think Heart Songs is wonderful, both in tone and lyrics. I hope I do not sound too nitpicky by making the observation. I was just curious. Thank you again for answering my question -- It really helped a lot. =w=
evan, get out of my head!
i was just discussing that earlier today--you are right. it is tiffany who covered "i think we're alone now", not debbie gibson.
rivers strikes me as the kind of guy who would know that, so i'm perplexed.
I love the song because I love hearing the entire band functioning as a real band and not just a backup band for Rivers. I just hope that no other songs on the album contain the word "underwear."
Okay, so I'm not the only one who caught that -- It confused me a bit, too, though Rivers could have made an honest mistake. Maybe there's another Debbie Gibson song we're just not aware of. And yet -- somehow I am reluctant to comb her entire catalog to find the answer. I really enjoyed identifying all the other references, though. As far as The Greatest Man..., I feel it's a testament to the band's originality, versatility, and talent, which is why I'm interested in how it is accepted popularly. I hope that everyone views it the same way, instead of simply saying, "Wait, he's rapping?" I just know I'll have some trouble driving around while listening to it, given the sirens at the beginning! I'm probably going to jump out of my skin. So we've got two references to underwear in six weezer albums, though this time now comic book heroes are involved. I hope you have a great day! And thanks again for responding.
Okay, so "My Brain" has a reference to underwear, too. ("Get me something for my hair / a fresher pair of underwear!")
I'm officially done thinking about that now. Yeah, this was really relevant, I know.
As for Shriner's favorite Weezer album ever, he 'fessed up: "I'm gonna vote for Maladroit. I think it's one of the best Weezer albums cause we're really just doing whatever the eff we wanted to do. We weren't at all thinking about the label or singles. We included the fans in on it and were playing a bunch of demos for them and we took a bunch of their suggestions into consideration. That album's like a giant jam to me, and it sounds sick to me. I really dig it."
HELL YES. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR SO LONG. MALADROIT IS THE BEST WEEZER ALBUM EVER. BETTER THAN PINKERTON. THEY ARE SO LOOSE ON IT, and Rivers effin shreds!
i am so proud of Weezer for going this strong this long.
Weezer is musical Viagra.
Keep making hard music.
bigheadjoe
musical viagra. that is quality. my wife told me the other day she didnt think anyone could ever have sex with weezer on. immediately proved her wrong. keep fishin has a whole new meaning now
I've been saying that for a while now. Maladroit is really underappreciated and Rivers shreds the hell out of his guitar on just about every song. That guy who keeps complaining about guitar solos should listen to Maladroit.
This sounds great. What an interesting direction. I can't wait to hear the rest of the record(I know many of you have already given into temptation, patience people).
